PRAYER SERVICES FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE BERLIN WALL

Prayer services for the victims of the Berlin Wall have been conducted in the Chapel of Reconciliation since August 13, 2005. Each prayer service focuses on the life of a single Wall victim, ensuring that his fate is not forgotten. One name stands for many, but one name also stands for a single individual.

The prayer services aim both to console family members and to create a forum for commemoration at a historic site that anchors the memory of the Berlin Wall victims more strongly in the public consciousness. Citizens and visitors, men and women, young people and the elderly, relatives and friends of the victims are able to take an active part in the prayer service. For further information, please send an e-mail to the Berlin Wall Memorial.

The biographies that are read during the prayer service are the result of a joint project titled “Fatalities at the Berlin Wall, 1961 – 1989“, that was conducted by the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Center for Contemporary Historical Research in Potsdam (Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung Potsdam).

This initiative is supported by Evangelische Kirche Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz and the Bürgerbüro e.V. - Verein zur Aufarbeitung von Folgeschäden der SED-Diktatur.
