Comic exhibition about Tunnel 57 in the Bernauer Strasse subway station

The exhibition “History Underground” presents a comic about the history of “Tunnel 57” on large-format billboards in the Bernauer Strasse subway station. The actual events depicted in the comic took place in 1964 not far from the site of the exhibition.

The story is presented by comic authors Thomas Henseler and Susanne Buddenberg from the perspective of one of the escape helpers. He describes the preparations for starting the tunnel on the West Berlin side, the work of digging through to East Berlin, the moment the tunnel was opened, the successful escapes on the first day and the dramatic events of the second day that would have fatal consequences…

In cooperation with the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship
