TAXI WALL TOUR

The border fortifications around West Berlin, known as the Berlin Wall, were 155 km long. Forty-five kilometers of the Wall divided the city into two halves. The Berlin Wall through East and West Berlin cut through residential areas and cemeteries. It destroyed the central urban plazas and building complexes.

This taxi tour provides an opportunity to explore the entire former inner-city area border while receiving lots of information from a well-informed guide. The tour visits famous historical sites where remains of the border grounds still exist. The route begins at Bernauer Strasse, crosses the Invaliden Cemetery and continues to the government district with the Brandenburg Gate. It travels across Potsdamer Platz and the former border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie and goes on to Schlesisches Busch, where an original watchtower still stands. On the way back you’ll see the East Side Gallery and pass by the former border crossing at Bornholmer Strasse, where the barrier was raised for the first time on November 9, 1989.
