1984 | BORDER AREA AND INNER WALL ON ENGELDAMM IN EAST BERLIN

1984 Border area and inner wall on Engeldamm in East Berlin

The white-painted "Hinterland" wall marks the beginning of the border strip from the eastern side, while St. Thomas's Church in the background is already in West Berlin. Surveillance begins well before this wall, however: Stasi, border guards and police use the so-called "Hinterlandsicherung" to control the area near the border. A certificate of entitlement is required for the stay.
